Why We Exist
H.E.A.R.T.S. exist to cultivate the development of young adolescent parents expecting or parenting from poverty to sustainability. We address the risk factors associated with teen parenting through social, psychological, and academic development.
H.E.A.R.T.S was created to provide stability during the gap of unmet need for resources and referrals. We are the only documented non-profit in the area that is currently addressing this need and implementing programming for teen parents.
Implementation of effective initial teen pregnancy prevention programs is key in reducing repeat teen pregnancy rates. The most successful programs that help reduce first pregnancies for teens combine sexuality education with youth development activities should be initiated for adolescents at a young age. The high rates of repeat teenage pregnancy paired with the growing gap in resources for minority populations create a need for H.E.A.R.T.S in Durham, where there is currently no state-funded teen pregnancy prevention program.
Teen mothers and fathers desire to become the greatest that they can be, and H.E.A.R.T.S. is designed to Help Each Adolescent Reach Their Spark.
