How It All Started
Ms. Tameka Brown, a North Carolina A&T State University alumnus, is a seasoned Family and Consumer Science educator turned entrepreneur that is making a significant impact on the lives of teenaged parents. Her love for children began as a teenager while she worked after-school as a Group Leader for Little River Elementary School in Durham, N.C. Brown also saw first-hand the challenges that derive from adolescent pregnancy and parenting as a teenager, witnessing friends and classmates face parenthood throughout high school.
After high school North Carolina A&T State University was the school of choice for Ms. Brown. During her undergraduate years, she interned at Regional Child Care Resources & Referrals of Guilford County, where she would soon be employed upon graduation. She began her career as an educator in Winston Salem, N.C. at North Forsyth High School and moved four years later to serve her hometown in Durham, N.C. at Hillside High school.
During Brown’s tenure as a Home Economics educator at Hillside High school, she was presented with an opportunity to launch a program that would support adolescent parents at-risk of dropping out of high school. The H.E.A.R.T.S. program was birthed by Ms. Brown in 2012 and has grown to have an exponential impact on the graduation rate among pregnant and parenting teenagers at Hillside High school.
Her background exemplifies her as a dedicated educator and public servant. Brown’s vision H.E.A.R.T.S is to establish a one-stop shop for resources, child-care, tutoring, and life-skills learning. This program caters to the child as well as the mother and yields significant improvement in the quality of life for the adolescent parents and their family members. Brown looks forward to succeeding her entrepreneurial journey by expanding the H.E.A.R.T.S. program across Durham County to make a substantial impact on the pregnancy rate and graduation rate among adolescent parents in North Carolina.
