227 high schoolers reported that they dropped out due to pregnancy or the need to care for children, according to Durham Public Schools in 2017-2018. This is a 0.3% decrease from 2015-2016 when 258 high schoolers reported that they dropped out for the same causes. This is impart to non-profits like the H.E.A.R.T.S. program, who have successfully graduated 32 teen parents for the 6th consecutive year.
Being an adolescent parent is one of the biggest barriers amongst high school students.
